MODERN MUSIC MAKING - MUE 555

The West Chester University Modern Music-Making Symposium is a hands-on workshop that explores the pedagogy and skills used to successfully implement and sustain creative experiences in the music classroom through popular music styles. With a focus on modern band programming that is student-centered, inclusive, and culturally-responsive, participants will gain experience teaching and performing on guitar, bass, keyboard, drum set, vocals, ukulele, and DAWs. This workshop is geared toward classroom music and popular music ensembles, as well as popular music contexts in band, choir, and orchestra. No prior experience is necessary.

  • 12:00-1:00pm – Lunch
  • 1:00-3:00pm – Music Will Modern Band 101 Training
  • 3:00-5:00pm – Creative Experiences in Modern Band

Tuesday/Wednesday

  • 8:00am-12:00pm – Full group Sessions
  • 12:00-1:00pm – Lunch
  • 1:00-2:30pm – Full Group Session
  • 2:30-5:00pm – Creative Experiences in Modern Band

Thursday

  • 8:00-10:00am – Creative Experiences in Modern Band
  • 10:00-11:00am – Creative Experiences Culminating Performances & Presentation
  • 11:00am-12:00pm – Lunch
  • 12:00-5:00pm – Industry Day (Exploring career paths and insider perspectives in popular music. May involve off-campus site visits. Transportation provided).

Friday

  • 8:00am-5:00pm – Participants attend the F-flat Books Annual Back-to-School Summer Symposium (Hosted by Wells School of Music in Swope Hall).
