Job title Laboratory Aide, Chemistry Department Concise Job description Assists with student laboratory preparations. Assists with instrumentation and in-lab support as directed. Analyzes student samples. Requires some chemistry and instrumentation background. Sample tasks assigned to student workers 1) Filling vials for organic lab, supervised prep assistance, cleaning of labs, glassware cleaning and putting away. Glove and goggle safety, simple computer entries 2) Following prep books instructions with little assistance = reading schedules of labs correctly, reading the lab preps thoroughly, putting out and putting away prep materials, refilling solutions from existing stock 3) Making a dilution, making a solution, proper notebook entries, using concentrated solutions carefully and filling solvent bottles in hood 4) Titration, melting points for or lab, GC for org lab, IR for org lab, computerized inventory analytic solution prep, higher independence and problem-solving
Lab Aid (Pay Band 2) Informal interview & approval by chairperson. Chemistry/Science major preferred

- This position will provide general assistance with:
- Chemistry Department student laboratory preparations and student sample analysis.
- Specific duties as they relate to this department:
- Lab Preparation assistance: Setting up and putting away materials for scheduled student laboratories. Following prep book instructions and reading schedules. Understanding labels with chemical name, formula and concentration. Working Safely: Using gloves, goggles, dust mask. Employing safe material and chemical handling methods. Maintaining neatness, cleanliness, and organization of labs and other work areas. Chemical and Technical: Filling and refilling solution bottles and vials. Making a dilution, making a solution. Analyzing solution concentrations using titration. Analyzing student samples as directed using instruments and analytic methods such as melting points, mass measurements, GC, IR. Other: Performing computerized or manual inventory of chemicals. Occasional clerical, stock, shipping and receiving, and other assigned support tasks. Works with staff, faculty, as well as with students. Requires: Informal interview and approval of the Chairperson and/ or the Coordinator. Candidate should have some chemistry background, preferably chemistry or other science major. Accepted Students: Workers receive orientation, as well as ongoing safety and other necessary and personalized training. Duties are assigned based on level of experience and ability.

- This position will provide general assistance with:
- Provide general clerical and receiving support for the Chemistry Department
- Specific duties as they relate to this department:
- Provide reception, answering telephones and taking messages. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), e-mail and web browser programs. Includes duties such as typing, filing, copying, faxing, and scanning. Assist with receiving and delivery of materials within the building complex. Perform computerized or manual inventory of stockroom materials. Maintain high degree of confidentiality with sensitive material, information, and conversations. Assist with other similar assigned support tasks and on-going or special projects. Works effectively and professionally with staff, faculty, and students. Ability to follow instructions, complete tasks with attention to detail, and work independently. Reliably report to work for scheduled hours. Requires an informal interview and approval of the Chemistry Department Chairperson and/ or the Laboratory Coordinator. Workers receive orientation and personalized training.
