LIT 360 - Special Topics Children's/Young Adult Literature. Taught by Dr. Emily Aguilo-Perez.
Rules and Rebels: Children’s Literature and the Making of “Good Behavior”
Why are some kids praised for being “good” while others are labeled troublemakers?
This course explores how children’s and young adult books teach obedience, discipline...
and rebellion. From picturebooks about rules to school stories and YA novels about
“bad behavior,” we’ll uncover how stories shape ideas about childhood, authority,
and power. Along the way, we’ll also look at the kids who break the rules, challenge
expectations, and push back. If you’re interested in literature, culture, education,
or media (and you like questioning who gets to make the rules), this course is for
you!
